New World warblers | Parulidae

Amerikaanse zangers | Reinitas

The bill is thin and pointed, built for plucking small arthropods from leaves and twigs, often while fluttering constantly or hanging from the outermost twig tips. Many species wear a bold, high-contrast head and wing pattern during the breeding season that gives way after the moult to a much duller winter plumage, so the same bird can be almost unrecognisable from its spring self by autumn. The nest is a compact cup, usually tucked low in shrubs or even on the ground, and is among the favourite targets of the Brown-headed Cowbird, which slips an egg of its own into it unnoticed. Migration in many species takes place in one unbroken overnight flight across long distances, with some populations crossing the Gulf of Mexico in a single stage.
