Old World parakeets | Psittaculidae
Halsbandparkieten | Cotorras
This family gathers a large part of the parrots of Africa, Asia and Australasia and rests mainly on molecular data. No species occurs naturally in the region. Two species have escaped from captivity or been released and have become established on a number of islands. Rose-ringed Parakeet, native to Africa and South Asia, is slender and green with a long graduated tail and a red bill; the male has a narrow black and pink collar. It occurs on Puerto Rico, Cuba, Jamaica, Barbados, Guadeloupe, Martinique and Curaçao, among others. Rosy-faced Lovebird, native to south-western Africa, is small and stocky, green with a pink face and a blue rump; populations exist on Puerto Rico and Curaçao, among others. Both species feed on fruit, buds, blossom and seed. They breed in cavities, and outside the breeding season Rose-ringed Parakeets roost in numbers in the same trees, calling loudly as they arrive and leave.
