Orioles | Oriolidae
Wielewalen | Oropéndolas
Medium-sized canopy birds with a fairly heavy, slightly curved bill tipped with a small hook, able to deal with hairy caterpillars as well as soft fruit. Males are bright yellow or orange with black, females and young birds greenish and finely streaked; that vivid yellow is remarkably hard to pick out among sunlit leaves. The nest is a hanging cup, woven like a hammock between the two arms of a horizontal fork high in a broadleaved tree. They stay in the crown, and clear fluting whistles give them away long before the bird itself does.
